LIVE YOUR LUXURY
Mother’s Day approaches, new data has identified a heartwarming trend that might make mothers smile more than the usual breakfast in bed: Home is where Mom is.
According to a survey by Realtor®, kids want to live closer to their moms, and the “Mom factor” often influences exactly where they buy homes.
“Many homebuyers and homeowners take their moms into consideration when making housing choices,” says senior economic research analyst Hannah Jones. “While housing costs remain high, moving in together with Mom or renting her a place nearby can be a great option both financially and to achieve your desired proximity.”
Here’s how the Mom factor is shaping homebuying behavior across the nation.
What is the ‘Mom factor’?
To get to the heart of the matter, researchers conducted an online survey using Morning Consult with a diverse group of 2,202 individuals aged 18 and older. The survey spanned three days (April 25 to April 27), and participants were asked a series of questions about their attitudes and behaviors regarding living proximity to their mothers.
Survey results paint a clear Mom-forward picture: The majority of Americans want to be near their mothers. A staggering 75% express a desire to live close to Mom.
“I want to be closer to my mom” is not just talk—many homebuyers are taking action, the survey results find.
Where Mom lives influences pivotal choices about where children seek to establish roots, with 72% of respondents saying that living in close proximity to their mothers is an important factor when considering where to reside.
This data seems to underscore the ties that bind mothers and their kids and the desire to remain connected as life progresses.
Moms influence location, location, location
What sets this maternal trend apart is the desire to make it to Mom’s for Sunday dinner and the concrete actions children are taking to be mother-adjacent.
The survey found that around half of Americans have either moved (or their moms relocated) to be closer to each other or intend to do so in order to be closer to their mothers.
Among those who have already made the move, one-third had purchased or rented a new home near their moms.
Moms and kids are also moving in together, with 20% of children moving in with their moms and 13% of moms living with their kids.
Planning for the future includes Mom, too
Among those who intend to relocate, another third plan to buy or rent a new home near their mothers. This suggests that being close to a maternal figure holds serious weight regarding some homebuyers’ must-have list.
While kids moving closer to their mothers tugs at the heartstrings, there are also practical benefits to living in close proximity to a parent. From regular family gatherings to available support during times of need, the advantages of being near family are many.
“It is clear that even as adults, Americans want to be a little closer to Mom,” says Jones. “Not only can moms offer much appreciated support with things such as child care, but moms can also reap the benefits of being close to their kid(s) and grandkid(s) as they transition into retirement and beyond.”
In a nutshell, this data proves something we knew all along: Kids love their moms. Happy Mother’s Day! Live Your Luxury!
